Am I Autistic? How Do I Find Out?
With the rise of TikTok and social media, more adults are finding themselves asking, “Am I autistic?” Maybe you have come across videos or posts that describe experiences that feel very familiar, such as feeling different socially, becoming overwhelmed by certain sounds or textures, needing things to feel predictable, or feeling exhausted after spending time with other people. For some adults, this may be the first time they have considered that autism could help explain patterns they have experienced for much of their lives.
Many adults who seek an evaluation have spent years figuring out how to navigate social situations, unexpected changes, sensory discomfort, and other aspects of daily life that may require more effort. They may rehearse conversations, watch other people for cues, rely on familiar routines, or push through discomfort without anyone around them realizing how much effort it takes. Some have done well in school, built careers, developed relationships, and appear to function very well from the outside. Those things do not necessarily rule out autism. Sometimes understanding the effort behind someone’s functioning is just as important as looking at what they can accomplish.
An autism evaluation looks at how these patterns fit together across a person’s life. It considers developmental history, social experiences, communication style, sensory needs, routines, interests, emotional functioning, and how someone manages everyday life. It also considers other conditions that can overlap with autism, including ADHD, anxiety, OCD, and trauma. Sometimes autism is the best explanation for longstanding patterns, and sometimes something else fits better. Either way, simply having a better understanding of these patterns can bring clarity to experiences they may have been trying to make sense of for years.
